How to mix a song online

Open the song in Genie Studio with its parts on separate tracks (split it into stems or upload your own tracks), then press Auto Mix: in one click it balances volume by measured loudness, adds EQ and compression for each role, spreads the instruments across the stereo field and adds a little reverb. It is free and Ctrl+Z puts your mix back. Then fine-tune by ear with the mixer (EQ, compressor, de-esser, reverb, delay, sidechain, group buses and automation) and watch the LUFS meter. Mixing is free; exports need Starter or above.

Melo sliding faders on a glowing mixing desk

Steps

  1. Get every part on its own track

A mix needs separate tracks. Open a project you built in Genie Studio, upload your own tracks, or split a finished song into stems (Voice + Music 4 credits, Full multitrack 20).

  2. Run Auto Mix

Open Auto Mix and keep the four areas on: volume (balanced by measured loudness), presence (EQ and compression per role, with room carved for the vocal), pan (instruments spread, low end centred) and reverb (more on vocals and keys, none on bass). It needs at least two tracks and lands as one undo step.

  3. Fine-tune the balance by ear

Play the loudest section and adjust the faders until the vocal sits on top and nothing fights it. Use solo and mute to check each part.

  4. Shape each track

Open a track’s channel: EQ to remove mud or harshness, compressor to even it out, de-esser on vocals, saturation for warmth, reverb and delay for space. Presets are good starting points, and the spectrum view shows which frequencies clash.

  5. Group and automate

Send drums or backing vocals to a group bus to treat them together, use sidechain so the kick ducks the bass, and draw automation to raise the vocal in the chorus.

  6. Check the loudness, then master

Leave headroom on the master and check the LUFS meter. When the mix is right, master it (4 credits) or export the mix as WAV.

What Auto Mix changes, and what it leaves alone

Auto Mix only writes the volume, pan, EQ, compression and reverb settings it owns. Tuning, gate, de-esser, sidechain, mute, solo and routing stay as you set them, and the whole result is a single undo step.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing with one track. A single stereo file cannot be rebalanced. Split it into stems first.
  • Turning everything up. Pull the others down instead and leave headroom.
  • Soloing too long. A part that sounds great solo can clash in the mix. Judge it with everything playing.
  • Skipping the vocal. The vocal carries the song. Make it clear first, then build around it.

Questions

Is mixing free?

Yes. Auto Mix, the mixer, every effect, buses and automation are free in Genie Studio. Exporting needs Starter or above.

What is the difference between mixing and mastering?

Mixing balances the tracks against each other. Mastering polishes the finished stereo mix so it sounds consistent everywhere.

Can I undo Auto Mix?

Yes. It is one undo step: press Ctrl+Z and your previous mix is back.

Can I ask for a sound in plain words?

Yes. Ask the Genie, for example “make the vocal sound pro”. Steps that cost credits always ask first.
